Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are the alarms going to ring during an automatic fire sprinkler test?

It depends on the fire alarm panel and building.

If I could disable the fire alarm panel then there will be no audible/visuals for the most part.

We must test the sprinkler bell and waterflow devices to ensure they function properly.

  • Are the testers required to enter every unit?

Depends if the fire alarm system has devices installed to notify people in each unit.

For Automatic Sprinkler 5-year tests, inspectors are required to enter every unit in order to keep your property in compliance

  • What is a Manual Pull Station?

Fire alarm initiating device, that requires a person to activate in the event of a fire. This will activate building alarms and in some cases, dispatch fire department.

  • What is a Mini Horn?

A device that emits an audible alarm to notify people on an alarm condition in a building.

  • What does the date mean on a fire hose?

Fire hoses are marked with the date manufacture.

  • What does the date mean on a fire extinguisher?

The date on a tagged fire extinguisher is when it was last serviced/inspected.

  • How do you test the response time in a fire sprinkler?

There is a waterflow device located on the sprinkler system that simulates a sprinkler head activating.

As part of your test, we will activate this waterflow device. This initiates a signal to the fire alarm panel, which then activates the alarm.

  • What is a Dorothy Mae system?

Dorothy May is a requirement for residential buildings dating pre-1943 residential, which have 3 or more stories.

This properties must meet certain fire safety requirements including: All required stair shafts and area separation doors shall be equipped with self-closing devices to release the door by the activation of smoke detectors.

Sprinklers required to be installed over the doors leading into the corridors or stairs shall discharge water equivalent to a ½ inch orifice head.

  • What is a Sprinkler Riser?

Fire sprinkler riser is like a bridge between your water supply and the sprinkler pipes in your building.

  • Why do the testers check the mini-horn, can’t the tenant do that?

In order to keep your property in compliance, our licensed inspectors are responsible for visually and audibly verifying the mini-horns are operating properly.

  • How often do fire extinguishers get inspected?

Your most common fire extinguisher requires an annual inspection.

In addition, they require to be hydrotested every 5 years.

Keep in mind that a large variety of fire extinguisher types and inspections requirements exist and may require a completely different inspection interval then mentioned above.
